LLoyd's of London

1936 | Drama | TV-PG
When Jonathan Blake (Tyrone Power), a close friend of noted war hero Lord Nelson, is given a job at a prestigious but struggling insurance firm, he is expected to use his connections to further the company's fortunes. Though the firm, Lloyds of London, is considered one of the most trustworthy in the industry, Blake puts the company's reputation on the line when he predicts Nelson's victory in the battlefields of Trafalgar before it takes place. Blake's prediction is so unorthodox that the venerable owner of Lloyds, Julius Angerstein (Guy Standing), requests a meeting with his brash new employee. Not only does the young and handsome Blake affect the company's fortunes, but he has an effect on the personal lives of those around him. Lady Elizabeth (Madeleine Carroll) is unhappily married to Lord Everett Stacy (George Sanders), an associate of Blake's. When she and Blake meet at a company event, the two unexpectedly fall in love. Lady Elizabeth flirts with leaving her husband, but decides instead to keep their affair secret.Noted child star Freddie Bartholomew plays the young Jonathan Blake. LLOYDS OF LONDON was a smash and proved that the twenty-three-year-old Tyrone Power was a growing screen presence who could carry a picture, and that the recently formed Twentieth Century Fox was on its way to becoming a major studio.
